In 2009, my teammate, Mark, and I completed the TransRockies Mountain Bike Race.  We knew that riding for 550km with 15,000m of climbing in the Canadian Rockies would be a massive challenge, but rain for 5 out of the 7 days turned it into a wet, cold mudfest.  It was the biggest emotional and physical challenge I’ve ever done…but we finished.  (You can read all about it here).  With hindsight, it seemed like fun…kind of..so now we’ve decided to do it again in 2011.

This blog will track the highs and lows of my preparation for the race, and hopefully provide some insight for anyone else thinking of doing the race.  I’m no mountain biking expert, just your average weekend rider – my aim for the race will be to finish, maybe better placed than last time, but a finish will do.

Oh, and I might talk about bikes a bit too…

any tips about travel and (dare i say it) accident insurance for TR?

I used DogTag last time, and will probably do so again. As far as I could discern last time, “normal” insurance won’t cover you because the TR is officially designated as a race. I don’t think you’d want to pick up the cost of a helicopter rescue (heaven forbid!)

ps I don’t think anyone will insure you against getting lost 😉
